Walt Hampton
has been teaching K-5 General Music for eleven years. He received
a bachelor and Master's degree in Percussion Performance from Central
Washington University and has continued Doctoral studies in the
same field. He has served as Principal Percussionist Timpanist with
the Tacoma Symphony and the Yakima Symphony Orchestra Pacific Northwest,
as well as performing and recording with various jazz, rock, and
ethnic music groups.
In addition
to his love for percussion, Walt has a passion for teaching and
composing for the K-8 age group. He has published two books of Zimbabwean-style
music for Orff instruments, while composing and arranging music
regularly for his own students at Sunset View Elementary in Kennewick,
Washington. His 4th and 5th grade band, The Rugare Marimba Ensemble,
performs frequently at state, regional, and national conventions.
Walt has also
presented workshops and clinics on three continents and is a perennial
favorite at conferences in the northwest United States. He has received
several citations for his teaching, including the Washington State
Excellence in Education Award.
